Human cardiac catheterization was introduced by Werner Forssman in 1929. Ignoring his department chief, and tying his assistant to an operating table to prevent his interference, he placed a uretheral catheter into a vein in his arm, advanced it to the right atrium [of his heart], and walked upstairs to the x-ray department where he took the confirmatory x-ray film. In 1956, Dr. Forssman was awarded the Nobel Prize.
Internet Virtual Bigfoot Conference {I.V.B.C.} *Frequently Asked Questions {FAQ}* 1) What is the Internet Virtual Bigfoot Conference (IVBC)? The IVBC is a conference for the hopefully rational discussion of the topic of "Bigfoot" or "Sasquatch", as it is known in the American Pacific Northwest. The I.V.B.C. is completely free, non-profit, open to everyone with an Internet accessable email address, and posts to the conference are not moderated. However, successful Anti-Spamming measures have been implemented to prevent garbage from being sent to list members. The conference was created as a place where discussion could take place without the flames found in Alt.Bigfoot, and without the hostile reaction to the subject of bigfoot found in most scientific Usenet newsgroups. The newsgroup Alt.Bigfoot.Research was created by Silas Salmonberry and is connected to this conference, but is no longer used very much. Silas and I are the co-moderators of the newsgroup and of this conference. The IVBC also administers some world wide web sites for various Bigfoot/Sasquatch researchers. The URLs are mentioned in the FAQ text. This conference exists as a paradox, as an open forum for silent voices... where conference members are encouraged to share what information they wish to publically share, while not sharing the information that they don't wish to share. I hope for the most free exchange of information possible in this conference. Contributions of information for the FAQ are welcome, however, to quote the words of Gordon Rugg {G.Rugg@city.ac.uk} "In order to have scientific credibility, information collected will need to be in the usual scientific form of complete references to accessible, verifiable material, preferably in reputable peer- reviewed journals, and will also need to include material even if it's unfavourable to the hypothesis that there actually is an unknown primate out there. For instance, a reference to an article in a zoology journal citing find rates for dead large animals in North American woodland will have more credibility than an anecdotal quote from an un-named forest ranger, however good the ranger is. {Apologies if this is old familiar ground to you all - one of the perils of net communications with people you've never met!}" The one sacred rule of The Internet Virtual Bigfoot Conference: For a long time there were no rules at all on the conference. Then we met Jon Erik Beckjord, and we implemented one basic rule, which was to banish him and his posts. We don't like him on the conference, most of us don't want to read his posts. Mind you, he wasn't banished because of his paranormal bigfoot claims, it was because of his lack of respect for the other conference members, and excessive flaming. He has continued to harrass and annoy certain subscribers, including me, to the present day. As a new user, you may be contacted by our "outcast", and he may ask you to forward some email to the conference. It's a game to him, please disregard any posts from him. We voted him off the conference. If you do forward any of Erik's email to the conference, (our only official SIN), you will be unsubscribed. Mr. Beckjord may subscribe you to his own mailing list, "The Sasquatch Insider's Newsletter" as he currently calls it, and send you email directly. You may also grow to dislike Erik Beckjord's email, (most eventually come to this point), and wish him to stop sending it. Email him at: {davis@uccomputers.com} and ask him to remove you from his mailing list. You can also call him at home: (510) 848-4070, or visit him at home: 2923 Otis St. Apt.6, Berkeley, CA 94703-2540. If you want to unsubscribe from THIS conference at any time, email (majordomo@teleport.com) with the command: unsubscribe bigfoot in the BODY of the letter, NOT in the subject line. Please do NOT send commands to (bigfoot@teleport.com). 2} A) Is the Patterson film real or fake? B) Can I get a copy? A.} The Patterson film's authenticity is still an open question. 1) Grover Krantz - (From a Summer 1994 Interview, from the TV show "Encounter's the Hidden Truth") "I went through it, frame by frame, measuring everything I could on it... what the body proportions were... and I can state flatly that there is no human being alive who could fit into a costume with the dimensions that are shown there." "Maybe it's a man whose got his elbows out, and that's the shoulders... But, then any man of that height... the elbows are much to far apart to be the shoulders... there's one way you could do it"...(I.E. fake the movie)..."You get a six and a half foot tall man, go one third out on his upper arm, break it, and introduce a new joint" 2) John Napier - "There is little doubt that the scientific evidence taken collectively points to a hoax of some kind. The creature shown in the film does not stand up well to functional analysis. ...I could not see the zipper; and I still can't. There I think we must leave the matter. Perhaps it was a man dressed up in a monkey-skin, if so it was a brilliantly executed hoax and the unknown perpetrator will take his place with the great hoaxers of the world. Perhaps it was the first film of a new type of hominid, quite unknown to science, in which case Roger patterson deserves to rank with Dubois, the discoverer of Pithecanthropus erectus, or Raymond Dart of Johannesburg, the man who introduced the world to its immediate human ancestor, Australopithicus africanus." Loren Coleman and Mark Chorvinsky have also published works supporting the hoax hypothesis. B.} Mrs. Patterson owns the rights to the film, and Rene Dahinden owns the rights to the 952 still photos from the film. Some have argued that the film is in the public domain, but my research has concluded that Mr. Dahinden and Mrs. Patterson still own the copyrights. Check out Progressive Research's web site at: {http://www.teleport.com/~progrsch} for some frames from the film. 3} Why haven't bones or remains of dead bigfeet been found yet? A.} "Once a bone is divested of its covering of soft tissue and is exposed to the elements, water begins to leech out the minerals that gave the bones its rigidity. Once a bone demineralizes it can be destroyed easily, even by the acidity of the soil and water that surrounds it. Remineralization of bone over time resolidifies it and eventually fossilizes it. Regions like eastern Ohio which have poorly drained soils {clay} produce extremely fragile bones if any. The clay contributes to a low pH {acidic} and prevents water from easily percolating out of the soil and evaporating. The acidic soil/water increases the rate of mineral leaching." Source: "What the Bones Tell Us". Schwartz, JH. 1993 {isbn 0-8050-1056-4} {This FAQ Contribution is from: Todd Hogarth - bign@en.com} B.} 'Ray Owen, son of a Dakota spiritual leader from Prairie Island Reservation in Minnesota, told a reporter from {the} Red Wing {Minnesota} Republican Eagle, "They exist in another dimension from us, but can appear in this dimension whenever they have a reason to. See, it's like there are many levels, many dimensions. When our time in this one is finished, we move on to the next, but the Big Man can go between. The Big Man comes from God. He's our big brother, kind of looks out for us. Two years ago, we were going downhill, really self-destructive. We needed a sign to put us back on track, and that's why the Big Man appeared". "The Lakota, or western Sioux, call Bigfoot Chiye-tanka {Chiha-tanka in Dakota or eastern Sioux}; "chiye" means "elder brother" and "tanka" means "great" or "big". In English, though, the Sioux usually call him "the big man". In his book "The Spirit of Crazy Horse," {Viking, 1980}, a non-fiction account of the events dramatized by the excellent recent movie "Thunderheart", author Peter Mathiessen recorded some comments about Bigfoot made by traditional Sioux people and some members of other Indian nations. Joe Flying By, a Hunkpapa Lakota, told Mathiessen, "I think the Big Man is a kind of husband of Unk-ksa, the earth, who is wise in the way of anything with its own natural wisdom. Sometimes we say that this One is a kind of reptile from the ancient times who can take a big hairy form; I also think he can change into a coyote. Some of the people who saw him did not respect what they were seeing, and they are already gone."' "There is your Big Man standing there, ever waiting, ever present, like the coming of a new day," "He is both spirit and real being, but he can also glide through the forest, like a moose with big antlers, as though the trees weren't there..."' [This FAQ contribution was from Gayle Highpine - "Attitudes Toward Bigfoot in many North American Cultures" published in "The Track Record", #18, Copyright July, 1992 - Portland OR] C.} They don't exist. D.} They bury their dead. E.} They conceal themselves before death, and the remains are therefore hidden. F.} Scavengers eat the remains. 4} Why has nobody ever shot a Bigfoot?/Why hasn't anyone hunting killed one? A.} They don't exist. B.} John Green reports that five or more Sasquatch have been reported killed on the North American continent, all vague reports. {Sasquatch: The Apes Among Us, page 188} Victoria B.C. Cheam Publishing 1978/Seattle, Hancock House, 1978 C.} During the evening of February 6th, 1974, a lady living near Uniontown Pennsylvania, was sitting at home watching television. she heard a noise on her porch and went to investigate, thinking the dogs were to blame. She took a loaded shotgun with her, to scare the intruders. She turned on the porch light, opened the door and stepped into the doorway and was horrified to see a 7-foot-tall hairy ape-like creature standing only six feet away. thinking it was about to attack, for it had raised its arms above its head, she fired into its middle. but amazingly, the BHM 'just disapeared in a flash of light'. {Stan Gordon, "UFO's in Relation to Creature Sightings in Pennsylvania", a paper presented to the MUFON UFO Symposium, 1974, pp. 144-5} D.} 'One common misapprehesion making the average person scoff at the possibility of bigfoots is the notion that .. if bigfoots really exist then "hunters surely would have killed one by now." There simply aren't many people who actively, or even occasionally "hunt for bigfoots" with the intent to kill one. A hunter, in a forest, who is equipped and prepared to hunt for any other type of game animal, is probably not going to be properly equipped or psychologically prepared to shoot something so intimidating, and so strangely human. For an opportunistic hunter to solve this mystery, he must drop the bigfoot on the first shot, then inconspicuously transport the body home, with no questions or fears about the consequences of his actions. Try to imagine yourself in that situation. Imagine your shock and surprise at seeing a huge, manlike thing you never really imagined existed in this world. Then imagine trying to make heaviest of ethical and logistical decisions while looking down the barrel of a gun at something of this nature. Would you flinch ? Would you hesitate at all ? Hunters, with rare exception, do not shoot at things they have not set out to hunt that day. Hunters go hunting for a particular type of animal. They are limited by laws as to the type of animal they can hunt at any particular time of year. A hunter can be arrested and successfully prosecuted for poaching, merely for being EQUIPPED to hunt animals not specifically permitted in that season. The only season that a hunter can legally arm himself with the type of weapon realistically necessary to kill a bigfoot quickly, would be in deer-gun season. During deer-gun season you can be arrested, or at leasted fined, for not wearing bright flourescent orange -- "hunter orange" (invisible to deer. Do think bigfoots eyes are more like deer eyes or human eyes ?). A game hunter can't legally hunt deer at night, except by special permission for crop damage control purposes. If you hunt racoon at night you can be arrested for NOT having a lit lamp with you at all times. Coon hunters typically wear their night hunting lamps on their hats. It's hard to be sneaky in a dark forest with lamp on your head. People assume that hunting dogs can be used hunt anything and everything. The fact is huntings dogs have to be rigorously trained to follow a particular scent and ignore all others. The typical training involves exposing them to body parts of the particular species from the time they are very young. It would be difficult to train a pack of dogs to all consistently follow the scent of a bigfoot if the dogs have never smelled a bigfoot before. I've asked around for many years now, trying to find people who actually go "hunting for bigfoots." I've met several people who have large enough rifles to do the job right, and who are not philosophically opposed to it. They meet only the most basic requirements. I have yet to meet anyone who aggressively pursues sighting reports in order to hunt and kill a bigfoot. I've heard there's a small band of over-equipped, weekend warriors in the Pac NW who are gung-ho about killing a bigfoot. However, the researchers who get the most up-to-date sighting reports don't keep in touch with them. The vast majority of Americans who own guns do not hunt. Of those Americans who describe themselves as hunters, the great majority hunt no more than two weekends per year. Hunters who hunt often, and year round, are hard to find these days. These are all real limitations decreasing the likelihood that a hunter will kill a bigfoot. Yet these do not even touch upon limitations related to WHERE a hunter can hunt. That's a whole separate discussion.' {FAQ submission from Matt Moneymaker mmkr@cris.com} 5} With all the people in the woods owning video cameras today, Why hasn't anyone photographed one? A.} There is some sort of "mysterious invisible force" that prevents proper pictures from being taken. B.} There are more videos. An incident in 1995 in Northern California publicized by the TV show "Hard Copy" could be an actual video of one. Another video has recently appeared that has been shown on the TV show "Paranormal Borderline". 6} Why does the public "evidence" of the possible existence of a being like "bigfoot", at this point, ONLY consist of legends, eyewitness testimony, big foot prints, strange sounds in the woods, and odd smells in the woods? A.} That's all "they" want us to know, and we only see what "they" want us to see. B.} They don't exist. C.} They are a primate and we just haven't found hard evidence yet. D.} Other evidence does exist, including blood, hair, and feces. 7} How big are Sasquatch footprints? Aren't the big footprints fake? Wouldn't it be easy to fake them? A}. This answer is from Dr. W. Henner Farenbach: 'Foot prints are currently one the "hardest" sasquatch data, since they can be measured in the light of day with a ruler and are not subject to distortion by the emotional state of the observer. The data presented here have been generously provided by John Green from his database with added local records. The data span 38 years and all the Western U.S. plus Western Canada. Many of the footprint records pertain to long tracks that were followed, in some cases, for miles, though still only yielding one data point for foot length. By implication, the records have been collected by many hundreds of people, most unknown to each other, without any knowledge of the "normal" size of a footprint {which isn't known anyway, but see below}. The list consists of raw data and has not been culled according to the "Credibility" of the reporters {a purely subjective value judgement, that would only lead to a graph of the analyst's personal preference}.' N= 551; Mean= 15.80"; Median= 16"; Range = 4" to 27"; Standard error= 0.131; Standard deviation= 3.07; Variance= 9.4223; Skewness = -0.1930 Kurtosis= 2.1616. 'The footprint data follow a Gaussian distribution curve such as would be expected from a population. The mean size is larger than commonly cited estimates. A collection of reports fabricated over 40 years by hundreds of people independently would have a non-Gaussian distribution {Sapunov, 1988}. The curve is slightly skewed toward the left side of a histogram {negative skewness}, i.e., slightly more small footprints than large ones about the mean by virtue of the contribution of juveniles to the curve, otherwise composed of the two adult sexes. It has a slightly higher peak than expected at the center of the distribution {kurtosis}, a result that I attribute to the overlap of a Gaussian bimodal distribution for males and females, which appear to show sexual dimorphism, though not to the degree that a population foot print histogram would show two peaks. The small standard error suggests that further additions to the list would make no noticeable difference. Given these statistics, even a generous handful of contained fake data would not significantly affect the distribution. A demographic statistician, whom I consulted regarding these data, commented that A) the skewness to the left of the histogram is in accord with the expected distribution of a population of mammals and B) that the leptokurtic nature of the distribution, i.e., the greater peakedness at the mean than is in accord with a normal distribution, would be partly due to the outliers (foot prints at 4" and 27") and would, furthermore argue #against# a pronounced sexual dimorphism. If a large difference in the mean of foot lengths existed between males and females, one would expect the combined curve to be bradykurtic, meaning that the central peak over the mean would be flattened and would be lower than expected by comparison to a normal distribution.' A.} They could, it's just that {a} the satellite images would need to be enlarged to a suitable size and {b} the images would need to be of an area which happened to have a visible Bigfoot in it. The cost and effort of doing a large enough survey would be enormous. [This FAQ Contribution from Gordon Rugg {G.Rugg@city.ac.uk}] B.} They don't exist. 9} How do I know if some "Sasquatches" are around? A} There are huge barefoot human-like tracks. B} Every creature in the forest becomes utterly silent. C} The call of a nightbird is heard during the day, or the call of a daytime bird at night. D} A powerful, indescribable animal smell is present. E} A roaring scream, a screaming roar, louder and unlike any other animal, is heard. F} Trees 4" thick are being snapped in half by a very strong creature that is apparently just out of your sight. G} A large creature is hitting large sticks against large trees, again apparently out of your sight. H} Animals are found hung in trees, heavier and higher than a cougar/mountain lion could carry them. I} Strange pits or rock-cairns are found in remote places. J} Trees 4" thick are found broken off, ten feet above the ground. K} Stumps are found in remote places, ripped out of the ground. L} One apparently speaks to you in your native language. M} One helps you when you break a leg in the remote wilderness. 10} Why is there a lack of evidence in the winter? A.} Peter Byrne {tbrp@gorge.net} wrote: "Bernard Heuvelmans was consulted on this perplexing aspect of the Bigfoot phenomenon and is unable to come up with an answer other than that our Homo nocturnus hibernate through the winter months, but this is not a satisfying answer, according to him none of the primates of our planet, - us, apes, and monkeys - hibernate or have ever hibernated." "None of the large wild creatures of the Northwest hibernate. The big animals of the Northwest are mountain lion, deer {various species}, elk, and bear. None of these hibernate and anyone that thinks that the bear - our bear, here {in Oregon/Washington}, hibernates, is wrong. Yes, he may lie up for a awhile when the temperature drops below zero and the wind is howling. Our black bear is not a true hibernator and never has been." B.} They stay where they are, for they are far better equipped than man to spend a harsh winter in the wild C.} They migrate to warmer areas for the duration of the winter. D.} They hibernate, as bears do from other geographic areas. E.} They go to another dimension in wintertime. F.} They don't exist. G.} There are fewer homo sapiens in the woods in the winter which means that there are fewer reports. 11} How many Sasquatch are there in the Pacific Northwest? A.} None (They don't exist) B.} One, maybe two or three. C.} A population of at least 2,000 individuals that would yield a healthy population with enough genetic variation to suppress strange recessive genes from being expressed. D.} Some other population number. 12} What is the "range" of Sasquatch?" A.} All around the world. B.} In the high and lonely places, and the low and swampy places of the world. 13} Do Sasquatch migrate, or migrate seasonally? 14} Are Sasquatch nocturnal and/or crepescular? 15} What are Sasquatch reported to eat? A.} Deer livers, rodents, berries, apples, elk, wild onions, roots, grasses, nuts, fish, pine needles, and breakfast cereal. 16} How tall are they? A}. They are reported to be from 5 feet tall to 15 feet tall. 17} Where do Sasquatch make their homes? A.} In caves, or lava tubes, perhaps underwater cave entrances. B.} In another dimension. C.} In the bush. D.} Upriver. E.} Nowhere, they don't exist. 18} Is anyone doing "real" scientific research into the phenomenon of "Sasquatch" and/or "Bigfoot"? A.} Yes, but we must qualify this affirmative response. "Most of the Bigfooters begin by gathering all the information they can find, then rejecting those reports or references they deem groundless or unsupportive of their biases. A few of the major players apply certain standards to weed out more vacuous or obviously fatuous data. Others build great middens of material..." [Robert Michael Pyle "Where Bigfoot Walks", pp 187 - Houghton Mifflin 1995] According to John Green, the primary splits in the field are: "kill/no kill", and "share/no share". Green's split with Rene Dahinden mainly concerns the latter. According to Green, it matters to Dahinden "who" discovers bigfoot, and everytime Green shares his data with people who haven't "earned" the right, it angers Dahinden. Dr. Grover Krantz is the leading exponent of the "kill" school, whereas Peter Byrne is the leading exponent of the "no kill" school. Ironically, John Green WON'T share his data with Peter Byrne, but Rene Dahinden WILL. To me, the primary split within the field is between "Native Americans", and "non-natives". A primary split outside of the field is between those who advocate serious study of the Sasquatch phenomenon, and those who think serious study of Sasquatch is a complete waste of time, money, and effort. The taxonomy of Bigfoot Hunters that Dr. Grover Krantz presents in "Big Footprints" is as follows: (Note: Categories 7 and 8 are not in Grover Krantz's taxonomy, I added them) 1} "Hardcore Hunters" {Those after a body, for whom according to Dr. Krantz "There will be no second prize" He assigns four main motives to this group: a} Fame b} Money c} Personal vindication d} Scientific knowledge 2} "Novices" {Are naively bumbling along in the belief that they will find a Bigfoot and that the world will happily believe them. They either graduate to another category or drop out of the search.} 3} "Tranquilizers" {Want to capture an animal for proof and study but believe it should be done with tranquilizing darts and bullets.} 4} "Recorders" {The recorders gather information, and not being hunters, usually distribute it freely. Their data vary widely in quality, and some really collect accounts the way other collect stamps. A few recorders become chroniclers, such as Green, Heuvelmans, Sanderson, Coleman and Perez.} 5} "Professionals" {These investigators, Krantz maintains, "do not want the sasquatch to be proven to exist." They have made a profession, or at least a reputation, based on the beast and stand to lose their standing {and for some, their livelihood}, when it is found.} 6} "The Lunatic Fringe" {Krantz eliminates all those who mix UFO and paranormal information with hominid reports as irrelevant or in the category of wackos.} "Not only do these people not have both oars in the water, they don't even have a boat" {Robert Pyle} Yet, like a bad penny, they keep turning up, so maybe there's something real fueling the persistance of vision. They tap into a common public perception that the government can't be trusted and that rational science isn't giving us the whole picture. 7} "Native Americans" I {the author} consider myself part of this category, even though I'm only part Native American, and was raised as a white person. I have developed many of my own views about bigfoot though. Oglala Medicine Man Pete Catches told Peter Mathiessen the following regarding Bigfoot: "I know him as my brother... I want him to touch me, just a touch, a blessing, something I could bring home to my sons and grandchildren, that I was there, that I approached him, and he touched me." [Gayle Highpine - "Attitudes Toward Bigfoot in many North American Cultures" published in "The Track Record", #18, Copyright July, 1992 - Portland OR] I think we should have complete respect for the "Sasquatch". We harm the Sasquatch at our own peril. We humans need to be less aggressive and destructive, towards each other, towards the Sasquatch, and towards the whole Earth. I also believe we need to learn how to communicate better. I know I might sound a bit naive and utopian, but I'm really I'm not. I even think the "K-Dart" described next is a too aggressive an approach and should be avoided. 8} "The K-Darters" I would place the Bigfoot Research Project is in an eighth taxonomic category which isn't quite captured by any of the aforementioned categories. The project's main aim is to study the creature, and at the end of a five year grant, write extensively of the projects goals, successes, and failures,... consequently it doesn't really matter who proves the existence of "Bigfoot". Preferably, the Project will accomplish this first,... by using computer programs designed to track and find patterns of serial killers... tracking the creature by forecasting its whereabouts by computer. Ground stations are being implemented in target areas, that use recently declassified military technology, such as night vision video cameras and motion-sensing devices, that will alert the Project staff, which will close in using a helicopter with a FLIR unit {Forward Looking Infra Red}. Once the staff is in sight of the "Sasquatch", a "K-Dart", which was developed to obtain skin samples from free-ranging orangutans, will be fired toward the"Sasquatch". It is hoped by the project that a full size biopsy sample, 3mm x 10mm, will be obtained by the "K-Dart", and immediately frozen, in the field, using new freezing techniques. Upon impact the K-Dart cuts a section of skin that it retains as the dart bounces off the animal. Negligible bleeding occurs after the sample is collected and no treatment of the animal is necessary. It also floats in the event it falls into water. It is hoped that enough blood and tissue will be obtained using this method to perform an adaquate DNA analysis of the sample. The Project is studying a geographic area encompassing British Columbia, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, N. California, and W. Montana. Agreements have been reached with the USFS to share collected data. The Bigfoot Research Project is directed by Peter Byrne, F.R.G.S., {He wrote "The Search for Bigfoot: Monster, Myth, or Man?" - New York, Pocket Books, 1976, he came to this country from Nepal in 1960, to take over and run the northern California investigations being backed by Tom Slick.} This is the group that I am most closely associated with. I am a member of the Board of Advisors for the Project. I wholeheartedly agree with the benign approach expressed by the project's intentions, however, my private, personal views about "bigfoot" are not to be interpreted in any way as reflecting the views of the project. I try not to embarrass the project, given my gratitude at being invited to join the Board of Advisors. I go my own way though, and do not always agree with the project's views. The project staff, which works closely with Peter Byrne is composed of Tod Deery and Deborah Wolman. These three do the actual work of the project. - The Bigfoot Research Project PO Box 126 Mount Hood OR 97041 USA Toll Free in the Pacific Northwest 1{800}BIGFOOT {1-800-244-3668} Everywhere else, please call in the USA {541}352-7000 FAX: {541}352-7535 Internet Email: (tbrp@gorge.net) World Wide Web: {http://www.teleport.com/~tbrp} - Western Bigfoot Society Ray Crowe, Director 8622 N. Silas is a Kootenai person who inspired me to create the IVBC, and who created the Usenet Newsgroup Alt.Bigfoot.Research. Silas and I were co-moderators of both the Newsgroup and the IVBC. We created them as cross-connected things. If any of you ever run into Silas, tell him I miss him, and to drop me a line sometime. Silas could return as co-moderator if he ever wished to. When I last spoke to him Silas had a masters degree in signal analysis, and was living in Chicago. 19.} Can you recommend any Bigfoot/Sasquatch Books and Periodicals: A.)
